Here's some additional information to consider if you are still undecided ..... Industry Requirements Firstly, look at why you're implementing a drug free workplace program. If it is because of industry requirements you will need to consider what your industrys' requirements are. Two examples that come to mind are: Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) only recognising saliva drug testing in the aviation industry whilst Independent Transport Safety and Reliability Regulator (ITSRR) who regulates organisations such as Railcorp do not recognise saliva drug testing and only acknowledge urine drug testing at this point. Detection Times and your Organisations Objectives Secondly, a primary difference between urine drug testing and saliva drug testing is that with urine testing you may be testing drugs in the system for up to 3 months where as saliva drug testing reveals much more recent use generally up to a couple of weeks. You will need to consider the objectives of your program. A fairly common objective for a urine testing program is to test 25% of your personnel 6 monthly. For a saliva drug testing program you may wish to increase the frequency of testing and/or the number of tests completed to ensure you are testing a large enough sample to be representative of your workplace. Correlation of impairment to testing While there is no direct correlation between either urine drug testing or saliva drug testing and workplace impairment there is a general correlation. Based on saliva drug testing detecting more recent use it is generally accepted that it is more relevant in a workplace impairment context. Specimen Collection There are several considerations in regard to specimen collection the first is having facilities available to conduct urine drug testing as outlined in the standard AS4308. Privacy is also a contentious issue with respect to urine drug testing. However, as recent as August 08, the industrial relations commission ruled urine testing is still the appropriate method at this point. Adulteration is also a widely considered issue and most urine drug testing includes testing for adulterants. It is generally accepted that there is less opportunity for adulteration of saliva specimens. WIKS offers nationally accredited drug and alcohol testing officer training to ensure specimen collection is carried out in accordance with the requirements of the standards (AS4308 for urine collection and AS4760 for saliva). Click here for more information. Confirmatory Testing Positive preliminary results for both urine drug testing and saliva drug testing should be confirmed by a laboratory. Many laboratories are available for confirmatory urine drug testing to AS4308 as this method has been available for a substantial amount of time. There are currently no accredited laboratories for confirmatory saliva testing to the Australian Standard 4670 although it is understood there are at least two laboratories currently undergoing the certification process. Currently our clients are choosing to either do urine drug testing or a combination of saliva and urine testing. Where there are insufficient facilities or other less than favourable conditions, saliva drug testing is completed initially and further screening with urine testing and the urine testing confirmed with a laboratory where a positive preliminary result is identified. The future appears to be moving towards saliva drug testing although there is no availablity of accredited laboratory testing facilities at the present time. WIKS has available complete drug free workplace kits either Drug Free workplace Kit (5 tests) or Drug Free Workplace Kit (25 tests). Click here for further information on the kits. Tests are also available separately for both urine drug tests and saliva drug tests Please don't hesitate to call 0414 754 190 or email if we can be of any further assistance. |
