Lighting is an important aspect in all work environments often not considered until lighting is inadequate. The key aspects of lighting are both quantity and quality. The hazards caused from inadequate lighting range from headaches especially for detailed work or where flicker is involved, trips and falls often related to contrast from a bright outdoor environment to a poorly lit indoor environment, to vehicle accidents caused from glare or insufficient lighting on night roadworks.

Work environments that should undergo special consideration are:

  • All internal environments should have lighting to suit specific tasks
  • Nightwork particularly for temporary and/or construction work
  • Adequacy of Emergency Lighting

The lighting guide below gives indication of minimum lighting requirements for particular areas.

Once you have accurate measurements of the quantity of lighting the quality considerations include the colour of the light, glare, contrast and flicker.
