There are numerous benefits for having an effective Drug and Alcohol Management Plan.

  • Improved Corporate Compliance - both meeting legislative requirements as well as client requirements
  • Improved Culture - employees generally affected by drug and alcohol issues have reduced self esteem, productivity and incapacity and generally a negative impact on workplace culture.
  • Improved Safety - reduced number of near misses, number of accidents and reduced accident costs
  • Reduced Human Resource costs - reduced absenteeism and staff turnover costs.

An effective drug and alcohol management plan has a number of key elements.

  • Policy and Objectives
  • Education and Awareness
  • Compliant Process
  • Effective Reporting, evaluation and review
Policy and Objectives
The policy describes the basis on which the Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace will be maintained. Click here for more info
  • It specifies which legislative requirements the program is based upon.
  • Definition of the limits for alcohol, drugs and what "at work" includes
  • What types of testing will be carried out including pre employment, random, post incident and target testing.
  • The objective number of tests to be completed
  • The aims of the program
  • Commitment to education and awareness training
Education and Awareness
Education and Awareness is the key to setting up your program to run smoothly. Awareness training ensures staff are aware and understand the organisations policy, understand the effects of drugs and alcohol and the timeframes for detection as well as understand the process for a positive test and access to rehabilitation. Education and awareness training is normally completed at the commencement of the Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace Program and then as part of the induction process for a new employee. Click here for more info

Compliant Process
There are several aspects to a compliant process. A testing procedure outlines the process to be followed. Click here for more info
In terms of alcohol testing it is important to ensure:
  • the breathalyser is AS3547 accreditted (not just meets the requirements as some organisations advertise). Click here for more info
  • The device must be calibrated to the manufacturers requirements.
  • The testing officer must be trained and competent.
In terms of drug testing it is important to ensure:
  • the urine drug test meets the AS4308 standard Click here for more info
  • the saliva drug test meets the AS4760 standard Click here mp;nbsp;for more info
  • The testing officers are trained and competent to the AQTF standard. Click here for more info
Effective Reporting, Evaluation and Review
Regular reporting is a feature of recent drug and alcohol legislation and should form part of the evaluation process for all drug and alcohol management program. Objectives for following periods should consider results of the previous periods. Click here more info on WIKS online reporting module
