Drug and Alcohol Management Plans (DAMP)

Alcohol and Drugs of Abuse in the workplace present a huge risk to health and safety for not only the people under the influence but also for fellow workers, customers and visitiors to the workplace.

The Aviation industry has recently had new regulations introduced that came into effect on the 23 September 2008. The transition period for implementation is six months and is about to expire on 23 March 2009.

CASA has assisted organisations with the development of drug and alcohol management plans by providing a template for organisations. Click here to go to the template.

In addition to completing the template CASA has advised the focus of their audits will be on implementation.

WIKS has developed an aviation Kit that meets the testing requirements for a DAMP organisation. Awareness training for SSAA employees and supervisors has been included FREE.

WIKS can assist your organisation with implementation in the following areas:

Awareness Training
Awareness training consists of a 20-30 minute powerpoint presentation for staff in addition to a sign off sheet. This should also form part of your organisations induction. The training module covers the organisations policy, the objectives of the program and the effects of drugs and alcohol in the workplace. Responsibilities with respect to drugs and alcohol of staff within the organisation, what a positive result means and rehabilitation options. Available for purchase online click here. The powerpoint will be emailed to you once purchase is complete.

Breathalysers
The following breathalysers are both certified to AS3547 as outlined in the CASA template. However we recommend the Alcosense Precision Breathalyser for the Aviation Industry as this is closer to the NMI126 requirements.

Alcosense Precision Breathalyser
The Alcosense Precision Breathalyser is a fuel cell type breathalyser which means accuracy to 3 decimal places. The breathalyser requires calibration annually or approximately 1000 uses. This breathalyser requires mouth pieces to complete testing. This light, industrial grade, simple to use breathalyser is ideal for workplaces where additional accuracy is required. Click here for more information or to purchase.

OR

AL6000 Pro Breathalyser
AL6000 Pro Breathalyser is a semiconductor type breathalyser. Simple, quick and easy to use with two modes. Fast mode for a preliminary screening where no mouthpiece is required displays HI, LOW and 0 all non zero results are then screened with a mouthpiece to obtain a digital reading to 2 decimal places. Breathalyser shows CAL when calibration is required (this usually occurs between 200-300 uses).  Click here for more information or to purchase.

Drug Testing
Your Drug and Alcohol Management Plan requires you to choose the method of drug testing you wish to use.

Generally, whilst saliva drug testing is less invasive than urine drug testing, saliva testing only identifies relatively recent use. For more information about the differences between saliva and urine drug testing click here.

Drug Smart Cups - Urine Drug Testing
Drug smart cups are a leading simple, easy to use and accurate drug test that produces results in just 5 minutes. Click here for more information or to purchase.

OR

Saliva Screen 6 - Saliva Drug Testing
Saliva Screen 6 provides testing for the full range of drugs of abuse in one straight forward saliva test. Click here for more information or to purchase.

Conducting the drug and alcohol testing
There are basically two options for testing officers and these are either training staff within your organisation to conduct the testing or engaging testing officers to complete the testing on your behalf.

Testing Officer Training
Our Nationally recognised drug and alcohol testing officer training meets the requirements for Australian Standards 3547 for alcohol testing, 4308 urine drug testing and 4760 saliva drug testing.

Our presenters have many years of experience in the industry. This course offers the participants the theory behind the standards, the opportunity to carry out each of the tests as well as role playing the situations a tester can come up against in completing testing in a work place.

Click here to register for a course or click here to register interest in an upcoming course not currently available.

OR

Preferred Testing Officers
You may wish to engage one of our preferred testing officers to conduct your testing for you. You can rest assured that the testing officers on our list have completed the nationally recognised training and are using our quality products. Click here to see a list of our preferred testing officers.

Reporting
CASA requires reports to be lodge 6 monthly from 1 March - 31 August by 21 September and 1 September to 28/29 February by 21st March. WIKS reporting module meets the requirements for CASA reporting and makes lodgement simple and straight forward. Click here for more info.

In order to effectively manage Drug and Alcohol issues in your workplace it is important to consistently carry out awareness training with all of your existing staff and new staff on their commencement. A consistent regime of testing also ensures the effects of drug and alcohol issues in the workplace are minimised.

Early intervention and/or rehabilitation should also be available for employees where a positive result is confirmed.
